BD Hall of Fame Induction # 8 - Up

It is hard to tell how much further Pixar discs can push Blu-ray. As of this point, no one can find any notable flaws with the HD presentations, and Up may very well be the best disc on the market. Carl Fredrickson’s adventure is loaded with crisp environments, stunning levels of detail, gorgeous color, and top tier sharpness.

While it is difficult to find a single talking point, a personal favorite is the opening montage. Both dramatic and humorous, a variety of color tones are used, giving the film its emotional push through visuals that this Blu-ray captures flawlessly. As Carl’s wife puts on his ties, look as each one holds a distinct texture in the stitching.

The video is clear enough to individually pick out each one by the stitches alone.

Up’s focus on storytelling is the reason for the lack of ambient audio, but the action is amazingly aggressive. As rocks collapse on each other during a chase sequence, the subwoofer is rocked with low-end jolts, and Carl’s young companion swings through the soundfield as he hangs onto a rope. Incredible accuracy creates a fantastic level of immersion, and Up captures movement as well as the best discs on the market.
